Harmonizing Local Wisdom and Community Action for Mangrove Restoration

On February 11, 2026, the Women4Mangrove project held a critical stakeholder meeting at our Nursery in Cù Lao Dung, Sóc Trăng. The session brought together representatives from the District Economic Office, the Forest Protection Unit, and local women-led organizations to finalize our community campaign strategy.

Solving Challenges with Field-Tested Solutions

Rather than applying “one-size-fits-all” models, Women4Mangrove is integrating indigenous knowledge into every phase of the project:

  • Technical Precision: Following consultations with forest management experts, the Sonneratia caseolaris (Bần chua) was confirmed as the most suitable species for the local riverine soil.
  • Strategic Timing: Implementation for new and replacement planting across 5.0 hectares will align with the June rains to maximize survival rates.
  • Livelihood Integration: We addressed the challenge of post-project maintenance by connecting forest health to economic value. Promoting local OCOP products and community-based tourism ensures that protecting the mangroves is a win-win for both the environment and family incomes.

Building Self-Sustaining Communities

A core project goal is ensuring the community can lead the way in the future:

  • Specialized Training: Local officers and residents will receive hands-on training in forest management and tourism coordination.
  • Fair Benefit Sharing: A dedicated portion of tourism revenue will be contributed back to local development, ensuring that no one is left behind and that the benefits of conservation are shared equitably.

Moving Forward

The meeting concluded with strong support from local authorities in establishing a tourism cooperative, which aims to promote sustainable tourism development and ensure the rights of participating households. With the commitment of those who call Cù Lao Dung home, Women4Mangrove is set to deliver a practical, lasting impact for the Mekong Delta’s coastal ecosystems.
