2nd Mangrove Planting Campaign: Greening the Mudflats of Cu Lao Dung with Women4Mangrove

On October 10, 2026, the 2nd Mangrove Planting Campaign of the Women4Mangrove project brought local residents and partners to the dikes and riverbanks of An Thanh and Cu Lao Dung communes, Can Tho City, Vietnam. Together, they planted 1,610 mangrove apple trees (Sonneratia caseolaris) to prevent erosion, green the mudflats, and secure the land for the communities who live along the river.

Why Planting Mangrove Apple Trees Matters for Erosion Control

Replanting mangrove apple trees has a very practical purpose: re-creating a green barrier that breaks waves, retains soil, protects riverbanks, and limits the impact of water currents and high tides.

For local families, this barrier means:

  • Protection for land, crops, and property along the river;
  • Less damage from currents and tidal surges;
  • More stable, long-term livelihoods for people in the riverine areas.

The choice of mangrove apple as the main species follows the project’s earlier consultations with forest management experts and local communities (read how local wisdom shapes our mangrove restoration). Learn more about mangroves as nature’s coastal shield.

Community Action on the Muddy Mudflats

Despite the challenging, muddy conditions, from early morning the Project Management Board coordinated with local partners to gather in full force, roll up their sleeves, and plant the green seedlings. Participants included:

  • The Economic Department;
  • 4 mass organizations;
  • The Party Cell and the Hamlet Management Board;
  • Residents of An Thanh and Cu Lao Dung communes.

To energize the campaign, the project carefully prepared everything participants needed, from drinking water and warm lunches to financial allowances handed directly to each participant.

1,610 Mangrove Apple Trees for a Green Belt

The campaign successfully planted 1,610 mangrove apple trees, establishing a “green belt” along the riverbanks. As they grow, these trees will minimize the impact of currents and tides and help protect land, crops, and property, supporting long-term livelihood stability for people living along the river.

These 1,610 trees are a key result of the project’s first phase. See the full picture of what the community achieved in the Women4Mangrove Phase 1 summary.

A Day of Smiles and Solidarity

The event wrapped up with radiant smiles, a cheerful atmosphere, and strong solidarity between the Project Management Board and the entire local community, everyone joining hands for a green environment.
